the Best Attractions and Activities in Sacramento, California - 24-Hour Travel Guide
Overview - California’s seat of power may not be the most exciting place in the state, but there are still plenty of things to do in Sacramento. This city is thriving with great restaurants, interesting sites and lots of outdoor activities for anyone.
Breakfast - Dessert for breakfast? Are you crazy? Of course you are! And you are definitely heading over to Rick’s Dessert Diner for breakfast where there are over 250 varieties of desserts. While you probably won’t be having a frangelico torte or chocolate mousse for breakfast, there are plenty of pastries you can try – a truly decadent way to start your day!
Morning -
There are several museums to visit in Sacramento, but people may be surprised that the oldest art museum in the west can be found here. The Crocker Art Museum has been welcoming visitors continuously since 1885 and houses a number of North American, European and even Asian art collections from different eras.
For the not so artistically inclined, there’s the Discovery Museum Gold Rush History Center. Learn all about the Gold Rush that brought prospectors into California back in the day since gold was first discovered in 1884. There’s also a changing gallery that features all kind of exhibits, from local artists to exhibits commemorating important California events. Afterwards, you can stroll along the wooden sidewalks of Old Town Sacramento. Explore the historic buildings and maybe even participate in a historic walking tour.
Lunch - Have some real saucy southern BBQ and comfort food at Sandra Dee’s on 15th St. There’s the usual barbecued ribs and chicken, mac and cheese, collared greens and other yummy sides, but if you’re feeling adventurous, ask for some of their delicious gator meat!
Afternoon - Explore the American River by land or by sea. There are many bike trails and walking trails along the river, but there’s nothing like being on the river itself. You can bring your own or rent a raft at American River Raft Rentals in Rancho Cordova. Be sure you launch somewhere where you can experience the San Juan rapids – they are exciting, yet gentle enough for a beginner. You can rest afterwards and enjoy a lazy day of swimming or just floating along the river
Dinner - There seems to be a proliferation of Japanese restaurants around Sacramento, and most are moderately priced as well. Mikuni’s is very conveniently located downtown on J St. and serves up delicious sushi in a hip, casual atmosphere. If you like your rolls spicy, order the “911” (spicy tuna with chili sauce) or if you’re more of an “everything on it” type, then the “Train Wreck” is for you.
After Dark - The ultra lounge seems to be the hot thing to do these days and Sacramento is no straggler when it comes to trends. The Park on 15th is the place to hang out and just chill after a tiring day. Locals love hanging out on the patio on hot summer evenings and lay on the couches and the four-poster beds. On cooler nights, you can warm yourself by the fire pit (or strip). Try some of their signature drinks like the “Choice” martini or the rootbeer “Floatini”.
Sleep - Head back towards the American River and check into The Governor’s Inn Hotel. This hotel has great service, comfortable modern beds and is located near a beautiful park. There’s also free WiFi and a Jacuzzi to soothe your aching muscles after a long day.
