the Eternal City in Rome, Italy - 24-Hour Travel Guide
Overview - Rome has so many amazing sights it is difficult to cover them in a day. However, by sticking to the plan below, you will definitely get a sense of past and present in this 'Eternal city'.
Breakfast - Today is a long day with an early start. Double-up on the cappuccino at the hotel before heading out.
Morning - Make an early start to Vatican City to join the queues for the Sistine Chapel. The chapel is not open late in the afternoon so it is important to make this your first start of the day. Do not be afraid of the long queues, they move fairly quickly. After the chapel, head for quick-moving queues at Saint Peter’s basilica, one of the most beautiful churches in the world. Climb the skinny staircases to the roof where you will find great views of Rome, a gift shop, and even a café.
Lunch - Enjoy the atmosphere and ambience at Casa Bleve (Via del Teatro Valle 48-49) where everything in the menu is amazing – just ask the waiter for a recommendation.
Afternoon - Spend the afternoon in the grandeur of the Colosseo district of Rome, so full of sights that you could wander around for hours. Tour the Colosseum, with its crumbling yet still impressive façade. Wander through the ruins of the Roman Forum and imagine what it must have been like to be a Roman thousands of years ago. Leave the forum towards the Circus Maxiumus, head past and keep walking up Aventine hill along Via di Santa Sabina: just past a couple of parks and churches you will find the Aventine Keyhole, where looking through you can see the cathedral of the Vatican at the end of a line of trees – is it real or simply a mirage?
Dinner - Try the pizza bianca (or any pizza, for that matter) at Roscioli Restaurant (Via dei Giubbonari).
After Dark - See some of the sights missed during the day. Trevi Fountain is delightful at night, as the light playfully reflects off the pool below. Piazza Navona is also wonderful, full of the sounds of music and the clinking of glasses.
Sleep - The best part of Rome to spend the night is near the Roma Termini central train station. You will not have far to carry your luggage, it is a safe neighborhood, and prices are reasonable.
