Beer and History in Munich, Germany - 24-Hour Travel Guide
Overview - Munich is a wonderful blend of historical Germany and modern German classics (e.g. beer). Enjoy the sights, drink beer out of glasses the size of a small child, and just enjoy.
Breakfast - Have breakfast at the hotel – it will be hearty and you will need the boost for a busy day.
Morning - First, have a look at the Munich Frauenkirche, with its iconic onion domes. Inside you will find the devil’s footprint, supposedly created when the devil and the church’s architect had a disagreement. You can go up one of the towers for good views of Munich and the nearby Alps. Then head for Marienplatz to see the city’s oldest church, Saint Peters. But you cannot miss the famous Munich Glockenspiel – the biggest cuckoo clock in the world, which ‘plays’ at 11am, 12 noon, and 5pm.
Lunch - Grab a gigantic pretzel from one of the street vendors or down one along with your beer in a beer garden for lunch.
Afternoon - Spend the afternoon amongst the Pinakotheks, Munich’s art museums. The Alte Pinakothek has classic masterpieces from Da Vinci and Rembrant. The Neue Pinakothek is an impressionist powerhouse with Monet, Van Gogh, and Cezanne. Pinakothek der Moderne is (you guessed it) contemporary and modern art. If you have any time after all that art, make a trip to the Nymphenburg Palace and Gardens, one of the loveliest baroque palaces in Europe.
Dinner - Biergarten Chinesischer Turm (Englischer Garten 3) – a beer garden in the wonderful English Gardens named for the huge Chinese pagoda which makes this establishment easily recognizable. Plenty of beer and Bavarian food on offer.
After Dark - Hofbraühaus (Platzl 9) is a veritable German institution, famous for its rows and rows of raucous drinkers from all nationalities. Even if it is a bit over the top for your taste, it is a must see and should not be missed.
Sleep - Hotel Mark (Senefelderstraße 12) is central, clean, and has friendly staff.
