24 hours of Fresh Air in Edinburgh, Scotland
Overview - Despite the weather, Edinburgh has a fantastic relationship with mother nature. Try these routes to further explore the blend of city and outdoor here in Scotland's capital.
Breakfast - Stop by the Piemaker on South Bridge, a local institution with rolls and pies of every combination: plenty to keep you going all morning. Try a simple bacon roll or a steak pie if you are really hungry.
Morning - The first climb of the day is Arthur’s Seat, the highest point in Edinburgh. Take the route just underneath the crags that winds around the midsection of the mountain, then head straight up for the top. The views of Edinburgh and the surrounding Lothian countryside are an excellent reward. Keep the heart pumping by heading down past the Scottish Parliament, under the railway tracks, and up Calton Hill, the second of the seven hills of Edinburgh. Calton has several monuments and more great views to keep you entertained.
Lunch - Grab a sandwich or takeaway and head to the middle of the Royal Mile where you will find an entrance to Dunbar’s Close gardens, a wonderful hideaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The garden has lovely views of Calton Hill and the nearby buildings.
Afternoon - Head directly out of the city west to Roseburn Terrace, where you can join the Water of Leith. This meandering stream starts approximately six miles out of the city, but you can start the walk here and see some of the most impressive views and architecture of the entire route. The walk from here to the Shore in Leith is approximately six easy miles, a terrific way to spend the afternoon. You will pass many weirs (miniature waterfalls), the charming Dean Village, and the trendy Stockbridge neighborhood. Enjoy a drink in any of the pubs at the end in the Shore before catching a bus back into town.
Dinner - After all that exercise, carbohydrates are needed. The Tempting Tattie (Jeffreys St) fits the order, with cheap tasty potatoes heaped with fillings. Try the pineapple and cheese, or for the more hardy, the haggis and cheese.
After Dark - The three sisters, on the Cowgate, has a large outdoor terraced area. Grassmarket pubs also have nice terraces. For something different, try heading north to the expansive beer garden at the Cumberland Bar (1-3 Cumberland St), well known as a location found frequently in the fictional books by Alexander McCall Smith.
Sleep - Jury’s Inn (on Jeffreys St) offers nice views of North Bridge and is very conveniently located for Waverley Station and all the city center sights.
