Edinburgh Castle from Castle Terrace
Saint Andrew's Square, cafe hot spot
Overview - Edinburgh might not be known for its food, but Scottish cuisine is on the up – and the capital is one of the best places to find the best on offer. Try these recommendations to sharpen your taste buds and refine your opinion.
Breakfast - The team here at Clarinda’s (69 Canongate) have been making hungry diners happy for years. The cozy tearoom feels like your grandmother’s kitchen, and the delicious breakfast meals coming out of the kitchen will almost put your own grandmother to shame.
Morning - On Saturday mornings on Castle Terrace – which incidentally has great views of the castle – you will find Edinburgh’s farmers market, offering produce to city dwellers. Items that can be purchased for good value: pies (rhubarb and strawberry is good), jam (how about one with locally picked berries?), and honey.
Lunch - After exploring the edgy, contemporary galleries of the free Fruitmarket, have lunch in their café. Everything is good, but try the pink ginger beer for a refreshing beverage.
Afternoon - No shopping trip to Edinburgh is complete without stepping into gastronome paradise Valvona and Crolla (19 Elm Row). Come here to pick up all things Italian – from kitchen implements to wine to freshly baked goods. The staff is very knowledgeable so be sure to use them for suggestions or recommendations. Stay for a glass of wine or cup of tea before leaving – or try the snacks in their new city center café (11 Multrees Walk).
Dinner - Head to the Haymarket area of town to check out what Scottish food turned modern is like. First Coast (97-101 Dalry Road) rates high on the charts for diners, whether you like Scottish food or not.
After Dark - Bene’s (162 Canongate) is Prince William’s favorite fish and chips shop. So if it is fit for royalty, why not give it a try? They do a wonderful pizza (made fresh so it takes about 15-20 minutes – this is not the mass produced stuff) and of course their chips are fantastic.
Sleep - Try one of the many bed and breakfast accommodations that can be found in Roseburn Terrace or Corstorphine Road – just make sure you get as close to the city as possible.
